QuEST 2009 Highlights
Highlights from the recently concluded 2009 AFT QuEST conference in Washington, D.C., included AFT president Randi Weingarten's keynote address, a town hall meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, a panel on community schools and remarks from U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) has tabled amendments to House Bill 2643 that would have established a two-tier pension plan for all state-funded systems and instituted reductions in pension funding and retiree health insurance.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn delivered his first budget address to the General Assembly on March 18. He called for a much-needed income tax increase, but asked public employees to bear the brunt of cuts to address the state's burgeoning $11.6 billion deficit. Email your legislators today to urge them to oppose changes to public pension systems. |
The Illinois Senate concluded the impeachment trial of Governor Rod Blagojevich on Jan. 29 by removing him from office, effective immediately. After the Senate vote, Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke administered the oath of office to Patrick Quinn.
