QuEST 2009 Highlights
Highlights from the recently concluded 2009 AFT QuEST conference in Washington, D.C., included AFT president Randi Weingarten's keynote address, a town hall meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, a panel on community schools and remarks from U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. Daily updates from the conference, as well as video highlights, can be found on the AFT's QuEST 2009 Web site.
United We Serve bannerOn June 22, President Obama announced a nationwide service initiative, United We Serve, which is the beginning of a sustained, collaborative and focused effort to meet community needs and make service a way of life for all Americans.
State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) has tabled amendments to House Bill 2643 that would have established a two-tier pension plan for all state-funded systems and instituted reductions in pension funding and retiree health insurance.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn delivered his first budget address to the General Assembly on March 18. He called for a much-needed income tax increase, but asked public employees to bear the brunt of cuts to address the state's burgeoning $11.6 billion deficit. Email your legislators today to urge them to oppose changes to public pension systems.

The Illinois Senate concluded the impeachment trial of Governor Rod Blagojevich on Jan. 29 by removing him from office, effective immediately. After the Senate vote, Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke administered the oath of office to Patrick Quinn.
Greetings!

THE CHANGE YOU SEEK

“Control over change would seem to consist in moving not with but ahead of it.”

What an exciting time to be a part of the teacher union movement here in Local 1274.  We have exciting and activist new leadership in the AFT; the opportunity to elect more education friendly legislators in our Illinois assembly and senate in November; the need to create and wage a fierce campaign to defeat the ConCon; and the chance to make history and elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden, thus starting to reverse eight long years of terrible education policy (NCLB anyone?) and awful antiunion labor policy, among legions of other serious problems.

• Sample Programs

WIN producers gather news from labor unions and activists from across the country. WIN then packages the material for distribution to radio stations and for print publication.

Our producers and reporters come from a diverse background encompassing all fields of media journalism, from print to radio, video to the Web. We share one common goal: to create media that puts people over profits and empowers citizens to become journalists in their own right.
