UPI leaders' are continueing their voice and service to Illinois education.

Former president of the Eastern Chapter of UPI was appointed, with the help of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, to the Higher Education Finance Study Committee. Charles Delman will serve as a member of the group.

In addition, John Allison, current EIU / UPI Chapter president, has been working with State Rep. Chapin Rose on the issue, and UPI has a possibility of one or two additional appointments.

UPI President Ellie Sullivan serves on the advisory group for this study group.

"We will be well represented. Thanks to those that volunteered," UPI President Ellie Sullivan said.

The group will discuss performance funding options Aug. 30 at Harper College in Palatine.

Ralph Martire, executive director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, joins a  panel on Politics and Pensions Sept. 14, on the UI Chicago campus.

The session will run from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Other panelists are R. Eden Martin, president of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago; Addison Woodward, member of the State Universities Annuitants Association; and John McCarron. Chicago Tribune columnist John McCarron.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives interrupted their summer recess for a special one-day session on Aug. 10 to pass a $26 billion funding package that will save thousands of educators' jobs and help states maintain vital public services. The 247-161 vote in the House, along with last week's vote in the Senate, is "the ultimate indication of who's for kids and who isn't," says AFT president Randi Weingarten.

Expect to hear some really awful things this summer and fall, misleading statements about Illinois Supreme Court Justice Tom Kilbride. Big business interests have targeted Justice Kilbride because he is a worker’s friend. Those corporate interests may spend millions in misleading television and radio ads, asking you to vote against Kilbride’s retention.

CHICAGO TEACHERS UNION ELECTION HEADS TO RUNOFF

Incumbent Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart received the most votes among four other candidates in Friday's election. However, since a majority of votes is required, a runoff election has been scheduled June 11. Stewart will face Karen Lewis from the Caucus of Rank and File Educators.
