What Can I do if My State Insurance isn't paying my Doctor Bill and Bill Collectors are Calling?

If you are among the many who are having a difficult time getting your medical bills paid by your State of Illinois Insurance we suggest that you write a brief letter outlining exactly what you are wanting assistance in accomplishing.  In this instance the State is aware of the problem, an example of phrasing has been attached for your reference.

I am requesting assistance in having the attached bills paid in a timely manner.

While I am aware of the fiscal difficulties the State is encountering, the State’s

failure to meet its responsibilities to their employees is creating added problems

for me and my family.  I have attached copies of my billing statement with the

providers who are demanding payment including contact information.  If you need

additional information please contact the providers directly and I am giving you my

expressed permission to obtain any information necessary to resolve these payment

issues.  Your timely assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Be sure to include an itemized copy of the bill if available, this will be the one showing the diagnosis codes for each procedure (this ensure that CIGNA can’t claim to have not received it), as well as a copy of the latest billing statement from each provider with the name, address, and phone number of the billing contact.  This should be mailed to:

                CMS Bureau of Benefits

                201 E. Madison, Suite 1C

                Springfield, IL 62702

                Attn: Member Services Unit

It may also be a good idea to send a copy to your State Representative.  It will generally take 3-7 business days for CMS to respond to this type of inquiry if all of the bills had previously been received and are just pending payment.  CMS will respond in writing with their resolution.  The member services unit may also be reached at 1-800-442-13000 or directly at 217-558-4486.
