Moraine Valley Faculty Learn Community Colleges Do More with Too Little
The Moraine Valley Faculty Association met on campus on Thursday, Oct. 22. Chapter Chair Janice Hill discussed local issues such as the Turkey Raffle Scholarship, H1N1, Flu Shot Update, Veteran’s Day Activities and the Moraine Valley vice presidential search.
CCCTU representatives in attendance were President Perry Buckley, V. P. Suburban Jim O’Malley and IFT Field Rep. Brenda Pryor.
Buckley pitched the need to contribute to COPE, stating that 89% of higher education funding favors the universities. Yet community colleges teach 66% of all public college students in Illinois, including all undergraduate and graduate students in Illinois’ public colleges and universities.
Furthermore, the vast majority of community college attendees are local residents where many university students are from out-of-state, who benefit from the taxpayers of Illinois.
“Additionally, we, the employees,” Buckley said, “have funded SURS at 8.5% of our salaries. Our employers as well have done their due diligence. The state however, has not.” It was another reason why it is important to contribute to political education.
The call for COPE was effective. A good number of new COPE contributors registered, and current contributors upped their contributions.
